The Laser Zentrum Hannover e.V. (LZH) is a leading institute in the field of applied laser research. Approximately 250 employees carry out basic and applied research and develop solutions for the industry.
The Single-Frequency Lasers Group of the Laser Development Department invites applications for an
Early Stage Researcher
Marie Curie Fellowship – Gravitational Wave Initial Training Network (GraWIToN)
The Laser Zentrum Hannover is looking to recruit a physicist (or equivalent) as an Early Stage Researcher (ESR) within the Laser Development Department. The successful candidate will work on the “Dynamics of high power fiber amplifiers”. This project is part of the optical sub program of the EU funded “GraWIToN” program.
GraWIToN is an Initial Training Network, funded by the European Commission under the FP7-Marie Curie Actions for four years. GraWIToN aims to train 13 researchers (PhD students) in the gravitational wave search field. The network also includes an extensive training program consisting of schools, research activities and secondments in the labs of the participating partners. For more information see www.grawiton-gw.eu.
Within the scope of this project, the ESR will develop and characterize single-frequency high-power fiber amplifiers. These amplifiers are promising candidates for the laser sources for the next generation of gravitational wave detectors (GWD). For this particular and highly-demanding application, the noise behavior and the amplifier’s response to changing input conditions must be understood. To achieve this goal, the ESR will both experimentally investigate the dynamic behavior of high-power fiber amplifiers as well as carry out numerical and analytical studies on the theoretical behavior of such systems.
The successful applicant can be enrolled for the PhD program at Leibniz Universität Hannover.
The position is funded for 36 months. Recruiting is in accordance with the rules of Marie Curie Initial Training Networks. Candidates must have obtained their degree entitling them to embark on a doctorate no more than 4 years prior to the time of recruitment. At the time of the recruitment by the host organization, researchers must not have resided or carried out their main activity (work, studies, etc.) in Germany for more than 12 months in the 3 years immediately prior to the recruitment. Compulsory national service and/or short stays, such as holidays, are not taken into account.
The salary of the candidate will be in accordance with the rules and regulations laid down in the Marie Curie Grant Agreement. A significant mobility and familial status allowance will also be included in the remuneration for the position.
Qualifications:
- Good honors degree in physics, optical engineering, or equivalent, entitling the candidate to embark on a doctorate
- Experience in optical technologies and computer programming
- Fluency in English
The application must contain:
- Motivated letter of application
- Curriculum vitae
- Transcript of university examinations (in English)
- 2 recommendation letters
An assessment committee will evaluate the applications. The main criterion for selection will be the research potential of the applicant.
Severely disabled applicants with equal qualification will be given particular consideration. The LZH emphasizes the professional equality between women and men.
